Home insemination

Home insemination is an option for lesbian couples, single women and infertile couples wishing to conceive and is an alternative to IVF treatment, being cheaper and easier to perform. Many couples experience difficulties when first trying to conceive. However few people are completely infertile, instead most are sub-fertile or have unexplained infertility. Before turning to IVF, artificial insemination at home is an option worth considering.

Home artificial insemination

Home insemination is the process of performing artificial insemination within a home environment. Artificial insemination is a method which involves sperm being placed into the reproductive tract of the female, by using means other than sexual intercourse, such as using a syringe. Sperm can be placed in the neck of the womb (cervix), known as intracervical insemination, or at the base of the cervix, known as intravaginal insemination or inside the womb itself, known as intrauterine insemination (IUI). IUI should only ever be performed by a qualified medical practioner within a clinic environment as the sperm requires washing to prevent cervical shock.

Insemination at home
Insemination at home uses the procedure known as artificial insemination which can be undertaken by use of a home insemination kit, a complete kit containing ovulation tests, syringes, semen containers and many other items to aid conception.  Home insemination is increasingly used by single women and lesbian couples to conceive using donor sperm. Artificial insemination is also used as an assistd reproductive technique, to treat infertility using sperm from the woman's male partner, or sperm from a sperm donor (donor sperm) where the male partner produces no sperm or by heterosexual couples who wish to increase their chances of conceiving.

Insemination at home has many advantages over undertaking insemination within a clinic environment, these include:

  • Relaxed environment
  • Use of fresh sperm
  • Involvement of partner
  • High pregnancy success rate
  • Lower costs involved

Artificial insemination
is best performed just before ovulation occurs, the time when a woman’s egg is released. This is the most fertile time of the menstrual cycle and usually occurs 14 days before the start of the next period. This does vary depending on the length and individuals menstrual cycle.

This fertile window can be detected by a change in body temperature, or a change in cervical mucus, however ovulation tests most accurately calculate the most fertile time and hence the right time for insemination to be performed. Undertaking Insemination at the correct time of the monthly cycle greatly improves the chance of successful conception.

Artificial insemination Clinic
It is recommended that artificial insemination is performed at a HFEA regulated fertility clinic, whereby they will underatke all the nessessary health screening and infection testing on the donor. However if you are looking to enter into a co-parenting arrangement, with a donor who you have got to know well over a period of time, you may choose to consider home insemination, after completion of health screening tests. These home insemination kits are also useful for heterosexual couples who may be experiencing fertility problems and wish to enhance their chances of conception.

Home insemination risks
It is important to understand that home insemination does carry risks of infection and that advice should be sought by a medical professional regarding infection screening prior to any inseminations.

Single women who undertake home insemination using a known donor, need to be aware that the donor will be viewed as the legal father in the eyes of the law. It is therefore recommended that single women using a known donor who do not wish for the donor to be involved in the child’s upbringing receive fertility treatment from a regulated fertility clinic.
