Nutrition and Vitamins

Why is nutrition important?

General fitness and nutrition can play a major role in our overall health and our fertility. Studies have shown that the nutritional status of both the man and the woman prior to conception, can affect every aspect of fertility and pre-natal health.

Research has shown that a low protein diet causes fewer eggs to be ovulated, as does a very high protein diet. There is a greater awareness now that an intake of essential fatty-acids from omega oils (found in oily fish) are important as they help form the building blocks of hormone-like molecules called 'prostaglandins', and it is thought that they may be necessary in preventing low birth weight as well as decreasing the chance of premature birth. Fish oils have also been shown to benefit women who experience recurrent miscarriages as a result of blood-clotting disorders.

Iron, found in foods such as apricots, vegatables and beans, has also been shown to be necessary for fertility. Studies have shown that women who took iron supplements or a multivitamin containing iron were far less likely to have trouble getting pregnant, than women who did not take supplements. Inadequate levels of antioxidants can also impair fertility by resulting damage in DNA damage to both the egg and the sperm.

If your diet is poor and contains too many environmental-disrupting chemicals, trans-fats, refined sugars or excess additives, or if it is depleted in nutrients, this can significantly affect your fertility.

Vitamen vitamins

Vitafem & Vitamen

Many factors influence your chances of conception, including age, general health and stress levels, as well as sperm and egg quality. The more you are in balance in mind, body and spirit, the greater your chance of conception and the healthier your baby is likely to be.
In an ideal world this balance happens naturally. However, inadequate diet, intensive food production and processing and the demands of job, travel and family, can mean that our nutritional needs are not met adequately.

We recommend that all our clients increase their intake of important nutrients during the pre-conception phase, if only as an insurance policy.
